What are these formalities for?
They allow the French authorities or courts to authenticate the signature or capacity of the foreign authority that issued the document. They apply, for example, to birth, marriage and divorce certificates, criminal records and diplomas.
Apostille or legalisation?
Between countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention, an apostille is in principle enough. For others, legalisation by consular authorities may be required. Some bilateral agreements waive formalities.
Translation
Documents in a foreign language generally need a French translation, sometimes by a sworn translator.
Preparing your documents
- request recent and complete certificates;
- check name spellings are consistent with your other documents;
- allow time: these steps can take several weeks;
- keep copies of everything.
Frequently asked questions
Does every document need an apostille?
Not always. It depends on the country, the document and the procedure. The firm will tell you which documents to prepare.
Can I translate documents myself?
Generally not: a translation by a recognised translator is often required.
