Asylum in France: from OFPRA to the CNDA

An asylum claim goes through several stages. If OFPRA rejects it, the appeal to the CNDA must in principle be lodged within one month.

1. Registration

The claim is registered at the prefecture. It gives access to reception conditions and to an asylum claimant certificate, depending on the procedure that applies.

2. The file and the OFPRA interview

The applicant completes a file setting out their fears, then is invited to an interview with a protection officer. Preparing the account and the evidence is decisive.

3. The decision

OFPRA may recognise refugee status, grant subsidiary protection or reject the claim.

4. Appeal to the CNDA

Against a rejection, the appeal must be lodged in principle within one month of notification. The applicant may apply for legal aid and be assisted by a lawyer at the hearing.

5. After the decision

Depending on the outcome: steps linked to the status or protection obtained or, after a rejection, further options to review (reconsideration, other procedures).
