Residence permits

Residence permit lawyer in Annecy

First application, renewal, change of status or refusal: the firm assists you with your residence procedures in France.

Procedures covered

The right to reside in France rests on many different grounds. The firm assists with:

  • a first residence permit application;
  • renewal of your permit or multi-year residence card;
  • a change of status (student, employee, private and family life, etc.);
  • applications for a resident card;
  • regularisation of a complex administrative situation.

When to involve a lawyer

A lawyer helps from the preparation of the file, choosing the right legal basis and assembling the right documents. Legal help becomes essential when the prefecture refuses, does not respond within a reasonable time, or issues a receipt with no follow-up.

A refusal can be challenged by an administrative appeal or before the administrative court, in principle within two months of notification. Where the refusal comes with an OQTF the deadlines are shorter: see our page on challenging an OQTF.

How the firm can help

  • review of your situation and choice of the appropriate application;
  • preparing and filing the file, including on the administration’s online platforms;
  • correspondence with the prefecture and follow-up on silence or delay;
  • administrative or judicial appeals against an unfavourable decision;
  • follow-up until the permit is issued.

Frequently asked questions

What if the prefecture does not respond?

As a general rule, the administration’s silence for several months amounts to an implied refusal, which opens the appeal routes. A lawyer can chase the prefecture and, if necessary, go to the administrative court.

Can I work with a receipt (récépissé)?

It depends on the wording shown on the receipt. Check with the firm if you are unsure before starting or continuing work.

My residence permit was refused: what now?

Note the date of notification, keep the decision and contact the firm quickly: the appeal period is short and the reason for refusal determines the strategy.
